Towards Personalized Medicine

East is East and West is West; and never the twain shall meet?

On December 19th 2014 Schro├źn et al. published in Science how diagnosis can be fine-tuned to a more personalized level. Integration detailed systems biology studies with phenomenological knowledge on symptom relations from Chinese medicine yields new insights in phenotyping. This is a step forwards towards personalized medicine based on systems diagnosis and systems pharmacology. The authors are working in the Sino-Dutch center for Preventive and Personalized Medicine, a collaboration of the University of Leiden (Leiden Academic Center for Drug Research), TNO and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
